You can never know when disaster might strike. It can happen at any time anywhere, and sometimes you just cannot be prepared enough for it. It’s hard to know when a regular storm might turn destructive. After a heavy bout of rain, a group of horses were stranded on a piece of land that became surrounded with water. They were too afraid to go to shore, but staying was also putting themselves in danger.
Nearly 100 horses were stuck in Marrum, Netherlands in 2006. The storm pushed made seawater rise into the wilderness area outside the dikes of the village. The helpless horses were stuck on a lowland knoll for three days. The stress and conditions killed 19 of them.
Rescuers knew they had to act quickly. Finally on the third day, they made a stunning rescue. Another storm was quickly on its way, and they had a small window of time to save the horses. Some female horse riders got together and formed a group called the Netherlands Horse Rescue. They heroically risked their own lives to save the horses.
After some intensely nerve-wracking moments, the women were finally able to lead the horses to safety. It was an emotionally charged but stunning moment indeed!
