Featured below is a picture that recently moved the hearts of everyone on the internet. The photo shows park ranger, Patrick Karabaranga, quietly comforting a gorilla who had just lost his mother to poachers.

As you can see, the ranger looks as unhappy as the gorilla. Every day, they put themselves at risk to protect these beautiful animals, so when one of them gets killed in such a horrible way, they can’t help but mourn too.

This mountain gorilla is one of three orphans living in Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. They had to be brought in after their parents were killed, either by poachers or as a result of illegal trafficking attempts to smuggle them out of the park.

Virunga National Park has more than 200 mountain gorillas, accounting for about a quarter of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
