In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an animal shelter has opened up that is very unique. The shelter only hires homeless people to work there. The owners of the shelter are passionate about animal rescue and have taken in dozens of strays on their own. However, over the years, they have seen homeless citizens caring for pets of their own, and they were inspired to open a much-needed shelter, and hire homeless people to work there.
The devotion between a homeless person and his or her pet is uncanny, and many studies have been done on the topic. Even a book, “My Dog Always Eats First” was written by Leslie Irvine, a sociology professor, discussing this.
Seeing first hand the love and respect homeless men and women have for animals in need, the owners of this shelter knew that the animals would be in excellent care.
Also, this helps the homeless men and women who work at the shelter receive a steady income so they can transition from living in their own apartment or house instead of on the streets.
This beautiful story is so inspiring, and the shelter continues to grow. Veterinarians often volunteer to give much-needed treatment to the animals. A group called CREAS, whose mission is to help homeless people transition off the streets, has also partnered with the animal shelter.
They aim to help the people who work there get set up to where they can more easily live independently. Can you believe how amazing and inspiring this is? Hopefully, more shelters will use this idea as a template, and this idea can go world-wide!
