Sometimes, we can learn the most important lessons in life through animals. Among other things, they teach us what being loyal truly means. Dogs aren’t the only animals that remain loyal to their owners. Sereno the horse made headlines when he showed just how faithful to his owner he really was.

Wagner Figueiredo de Lima passed away at the age of 34 due to injuries he sustained at a traffic accident in his town of Paraiba, Brazil. His untimely death came as a shock to everyone who knew him, including his horse, Sereno.

Dozens of his family and friends gathered for his funeral procession before he was laid to rest for the last time. His brother Wando knew how much Sereno meant to him, so he thought it was important for the horse to be there as well.

What nobody anticipated was how the horse would react to the incident.

The horse seemed to sense that his owner was really gone after the hearse carrying Lima’s coffin came to view.
“[Sereno] began to walk around the coffin, smelling the coffin. Then he neighed. It was a very strong emotion.

Everyone who was there was moved. I cried myself when I saw that scene.”, said one of the attendees of the
procession.

The horse lowered his head and laid it against the coffin.

According to Wando, the horse meant everything to Lima. It was as though Sereno knew what was happening, and it was his way of saying goodbye.

Sereno was visibly distressed and heartbroken. Lima’s brother reported that he kept whimpering and beating his hooves to the ground through the entire way.

While we may not understand the full extent to which an animal can mourn, it was clear that Sereno had definitely felt something after realizing his owner was no more.

Fortunately, he didn’t have to face the sad moment alone—he was united with Lima’s family and friends as well.

Sereno has since been taken in by Wando and his family. Let’s hope Sereno will remain happy for the rest of his life.
